Love Letter

Found an old letter written to my brother in 1979, from a girl in New York. Felt compelled to transcribe it and post it for posterity.

Dear [brother],

It feels pretty good being home again in all this luxury and eating all this great food and being able to sleep as long as I want and being able to go see movies and not having any kids problems to solve. It's also pretty sad because I really miss everyone from [scoutmaster training camp] and [little scout camp] alot. I met alot of people and I really got to know alot of people These two camps were great. Surprizingly I do not hate [scouting resort] after five weeks. I wish there was still another week of camp.

[Little scout] camp was a very good experience. I really learned alot. I've learned how to handle them and I can tell when something is bothering them etc. In the beginning of camp they were crying to go home and the last night they were crying because they did not want to go home. It make me feel really good. It made me feel loved. It made all the work I did (which I got 35 dollars for) really worth it. I'm going to miss those kids. Some of those kids were so great and cool. Most of the kids in camp took my address but I doubt most of them will write. The only thing I can complain about is that I did not get enough free time during the day. I would get about 45 minutes every other day. The [boy scout counselors] always had time off.

The night life at camp was pretty good. We had curfew at twelve. The girls had to stick to it. The guys didn't It is always like that. We had a [bonfire], a pizza party and things like that the first week. In the beginning of the second week we had a birthday party for Bobo. We got a cake, junk food and alcohol. We drank in the [bufffet house] in front of my [comendant's] face like assholes. Because of this all the [girl counselors] that were there had to go to sleep after [meeting] til Friday. That night I got together with Bobo and came back ten minutes late. We had extended curfew that night which I asked for. I ran down to the barrack and came through the back door not knowing that the [commendant] was at the front door and saw me run in. I got hell for it.

The third week was pretty good. There was a [dance] on Thursday but the [boy scout commendant] gave the boys a [terrain game]. at night so that they could not go to the dance. So the [girl scout counselors] (including me) were asking young [eagle scouts] to dance. The kids were not as rowdy as we were at our [dance] to dance, the [girl scout counselors] livened the [dance]. We also had a party that week. The last night of camp I had [duty] in the barrack. [Lesbie] was really nice and came at eleven and relieved me for an hour. I went to the first barrack and talked with [blonde Yonkers chick] for about ten minutes. Then Bobo and Timmy walked in and walked over to [Footsie's] bed and took something and left. He did not say a word to me. I thought it was all over after that. So [blonde Yonkers chick], [Maxie] and I went to [Maine Guy]'s room to get wine. And then we went to the pool and drank it there. At five to twelve I went back. I met Bobo on the way there and he came with me to the barrack. We talked for 15 minutes and then [Big Julie] relieved me for the rest of the time till curfew (2:30) since she had nothing to do . Every thing is still OK between us.

I was pissed on Saturday (last day of camp) that I did not get a chance to talk to anyone that was coming to camp because I had to go home.

I forgot to tell you about [counseling training camp]. It was great. I really got to know and meet alot of people from different places like L.A., Canada, PA, New Jersey, Conn., Ill. etc. Everything was coed except for where we slept. It was relly good. The only thing that I have to complain about is all the [meetings] (about 4 or 5 daily) and writing all the [agendas] but I guess if you plan on being a [counselor] you have to go through all this writing. The [symbolic chants] we had were really good. The melodies were to "Macho Man," "YMCA." "Just what I needed" (Cars), "Jumping Jack Flash," a Coke commercial, Dr. Pepper commercial. I'll sing you the songs if you'd like to hear them.

I think I've really changed this year (for the better). I did not flirt at all. I kept myself in line and did not get myself in any kind of mess at [counselor camp] or [little scout camp]. I guess people learn from experience. I really would not like to repeat what happened at ski camp every again.

Well I got to get going because my typing is getting worse by the minute. I hope you're having fun at sports camp and I hope I did not bore you.

Love,
[Lower East Side Girl]

P.S. Say hello to everyone I know

$10 Lift Tickets

The last week of January at Plattekill features $10 lift tickets. Good time to pull the kids out of school (or yourself out of work for "family reasons").
